Assisting Veterans and Families

Alton Green Memorial Post 194 is a distinguished and community-focused organization committed to uplifting soldiers, veterans, and their families. Through a diverse range of programs, the Post strengthens local communities, fosters patriotism, and supports individuals across generations. Its initiatives span American Legion Riders, youth sports, blood donor efforts, children and youth services, disaster preparedness, employer awards, historical preservation, homeless veteran outreach, JROTC and ROTC support, law programs, oratorical contests, and POW/MIA remembrance.

The Post also oversees additional programs, such as Project VetRelief, public relations, scholarships, school medals, scouting, sea cadets, women veterans advocacy, and youth law cadet services. Together, these services form a network of support that reflects the American Legion’s core values of service, honor, and community engagement.

Honoring Veterans Through Outreach

One of the Post’s most dynamic initiatives is the American Legion Riders, a family-oriented motorcycling program open to members of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary, and The Sons of The American Legion. Located at 1029 West Pearl St, St. Augustine, FL 32084, more than 110,000 riders nationwide the group participates in parades, motorcycle safety campaigns, and local charitable activities. Their involvement strengthens community bonds while honoring veterans through meaningful outreach and patriotic service.

Alton Green Memorial Post 194 also places strong emphasis on programs for children and youth, recognizing the importance of fostering leadership, character, and community spirit in future generations. Through Special Olympics and youth baseball programs, the Post promotes fitness, teamwork, inclusion, and Americanism. These opportunities allow young people to develop courage, experience joy, and cultivate life skills such as sportsmanship and perseverance.

Preserving Tradition and Recognizing Veterans' Needs

Beyond athletics, the Post supports the children and youth of veterans through additional initiatives that focus on health, family stability, and personal growth. Programs offering temporary financial assistance, health services, and a family safety network aim to ensure that young people are nurtured socially, spiritually, and developmentally.

A deep commitment to community welfare is further demonstrated through the Post’s annual blood drives, held in partnership with organizations such as OneBlood, the American Red Cross, and SunCoast Blood Centers. These efforts help save lives and encourage civic participation. Likewise, the Employment Services Awards highlight the work of individuals who support veterans’ reintegration into the workforce. By honoring employment service professionals, the Post acknowledges the importance of stable careers in improving the lives of former service members.

Preserving tradition and storytelling is also a priority for Alton Green Memorial Post 194. The Post actively encourages members to record and submit their historical accounts and narratives to the Department Historian, where they are archived and shared online. This dedication to historical preservation ensures that the legacy, achievements, and sacrifices of veterans and community members remain accessible for future generations.

Committing to Youth Leadership and Academic Achievement

Recognizing the urgent needs faced by homeless veterans and their families, the Post supports a network of organizations that provide comprehensive assistance. These services include housing options, access to food, healthcare, and mental health support, employment resources, job placement assistance, and pathways for personal development. A dedicated homeless veterans task force offers additional support, ensuring that veterans have a compassionate and reliable source of help during difficult times.

In its commitment to youth leadership and academic achievement, the Post actively supports JROTC and ROTC programs. Through Cadet of the Year recognitions and ROTC awards and medals, the Post encourages excellence among young cadets. Instructors may nominate outstanding students by contacting the Department of Florida Programs Director or reaching out to Alton Green Memorial Post 194 directly. These recognitions reinforce the values of discipline, service, and leadership among emerging generations.

Promoting Goodwill and Remembering Prisoners of War

Alton Green Memorial Post 194 also celebrates those who uphold public safety and community welfare. Guided by the American Legion’s longstanding pledge to maintain law and order and promote goodwill, the Post hosts an awards ceremony honoring First Responders, including firefighters, EMTs, law enforcement personnel, and their families. Through plaques, awards, and certificates, the Post expresses gratitude to these individuals whose dedication ensures community safety and resilience.

Youth education and civic understanding are further advanced through the American Legion Oratorical Contest. This program engages students with the history and significance of the United States Constitution, encouraging them to explore its principles while developing strong public speaking and leadership skills.

Featuring prominent guest speakers, the contest helps young participants deepen their appreciation of citizenship and the responsibilities that accompany it. In solemn remembrance of those who have been prisoners of war or remain missing in action, Alton Green Memorial Post 194 pays tribute through meaningful acts of honor.

One such tribute includes the placement of a POW/MIA flag over a reserved seat at the National Convention, symbolizing respect and remembrance for those who have not returned home. This gesture serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by many and the enduring commitment to bring every service member home.
