Helping Homeless Youth and Those Impacted by the Foster Care System

Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) supports young adults ages 16 to 28 who have been directly impacted by adoption, homelessness, or the foster care system in Baker, Clay, Nassau, and St. Johns Counties. Through its Educate Tomorrow Program, students receive academic support, career development, emotional guidance, and access to essential items.

Academic Advising and Career Readiness for Student Success

Academic advising is a cornerstone of the program, available Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Advisors assist students with degree planning, class registration, appeals, referrals, and long-term academic strategies while also answering general questions that help students stay on track toward graduation. Students are encouraged to visit the campus or call (904) 646-2300 to connect directly with a representative for guidance.

In addition to advising, FSCJ provides services to individuals with disabilities. These services are designed to ensure equal access to education, reduce barriers, and create pathways to professional readiness. Students may access walk-in appointments with support coordinators or schedule a meeting by emailing accommodateme@fscj.edu

The college also offers assistance with FAFSA and scholarship applications, tuition waivers, tutoring, access to computer labs, workforce education, and test proctoring, further supporting student achievement. Career readiness is another focus at FSCJ. The Career Development Department is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

These include personalized career counseling, professional assessments, research assistance, and consultations on career options. Students also receive practical support, such as resume and cover letter writing help, access to Career Source, and opportunities to participate in workshops designed to strengthen professional development. More information is available by emailing careerdevelopment@fscj.edu or by requesting an appointment online.

Confidential Support and Access to Critical Resources

Recognizing that academic and career success are deeply connected to personal well-being, FSCJ also offers emotional support through its Student Assistance Program. This program provides students with free and confidential resources to navigate challenges such as legal issues, childcare needs, relationship struggles, mental health concerns, financial hardships, addiction, and abuse.

Students may access help by connecting with student affairs, speaking with academic advisors, or calling (855) 384-1800 or (904) 384-1800 to be directed to additional resources. FSCJ also seeks to meet students’ essential daily needs. Through generous community donations, the college provides access to a variety of goods, including milk, canned food, peanut butter, rice, snacks, diapers, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other personal care items.

Students in need of these resources can reach out to FoodPantry@fscj.edu. For more information, while members of the public are encouraged to donate to keep this vital program stocked and sustainable. Acknowledging that access to affordable healthcare is another challenge many students and families face, FSCJ’s North Campus offers low-cost dental cleanings and examinations to the public.

This service provides care at a rate of $6.00 for children 12 and under and $10.00 for adults, ensuring that cost does not stand in the way of proper dental hygiene. For details or to make an appointment, individuals may call (904) 766-6571. Finally, FSCJ provides additional resources to help students transition smoothly into the professional world and manage the costs of everyday life. The Business Attire Closet provides students with access to professional clothing for interviews and workplace readiness.

At the same time, the Student Free Ride Program offers transportation assistance to ease financial burdens and ensure reliable commutes. Both initiatives are designed to remove barriers and equip students with the confidence and tools they need to succeed in their chosen fields.
