Programs Designed to Improve Public Health

The Florida Department of Health – St. Johns County is dedicated to advancing public health, preventing disease, and improving the overall quality of life for every resident. Through a wide range of programs, including clinical and nutrition services, wellness initiatives, community health planning and data analysis, environmental public services, emergency preparedness, and infectious disease control, the department addresses both immediate health needs and long-term community challenges.

A team of skilled public health nurses, environmental specialists, nutritionists, epidemiologists, and emergency responders leads these efforts, working collaboratively to protect community well-being. The department’s Nutritional Services program offers residents valuable tools, including nutrition counseling, food access support, and healthy eating education, helping reduce the prevalence of conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension while combating food insecurity.

Wellness and Environmental Programs for Disease Prevention

The Wellness Programs provide preventive health services tailored to all ages, including screenings, chronic disease prevention initiatives, physical activity programs, and health education workshops. Meanwhile, the Environmental Health Programs focus on safeguarding the natural and built environment through water and air quality assessments, waste management initiatives, septic and well inspections,  ensuring that homes, workplaces, and public spaces remain safe and healthy.

Preparedness Through Emergency Response & Timely Health Guidance

Emergency Response Programs are essential to the department’s mission, equipping the community to withstand natural disasters, public health crises, and infectious disease outbreaks. Through preparedness planning, community education, and coordinated response efforts, these programs help ensure rapid action and public safety during emergencies.

Infectious Disease Services work to prevent and control the spread of communicable illnesses within the community. The department provides vaccination programs, routine disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and timely public health guidance to protect vulnerable populations.
