Fort Mose Historic State Park allows visitors to explore American history while enjoying the beauty of Florida’s landscape. In addition to historical exhibits, the park features a scenic boardwalk, wildlife viewing areas, and canoe and kayak docks, making it a well-rounded educational and recreation destination.
A Rich Tapestry of History and Heritage
The history of Fort Mose is powerful and inspiring. It was at this very site that the Spanish governor of Florida granted asylum and freedom to formerly enslaved Africans who had escaped from British colonies. These brave individuals made the perilous journey south to Spanish St. Augustine, where, beginning in 1678, they were welcomed and allowed to live as free men and women.
By 1738, the settlement had grown to over 100 members, and the governor established a fortified town, Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, or Fort Mose, just north of St. Augustine. Captain Francisco Menéndez, formerly enslaved, led the free Black militia defending the community. Following the transfer of Florida to British control, Fort Mose was abandoned, and its residents were relocated to Cuba.
Over time, the site faded from public memory until the 1990s, when archaeologists and historians partnered with state and local officials to restore and honor its legacy. Fort Mose was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994 and later recognized by the National Park Service as a precursor site of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom in 2009.
Construction began on a representative structure of the original earthen-work fort in 2024, marking a significant milestone. A ribbon-cutting ceremony in May 2025 marked its grand opening to the public.
A Powerful Symbol of Resilience, Heritage, and Hope
Today, Fort Mose is featured on the National Underground Railroad to Freedom, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, and the Florida African American History Trail. It continues to serve as a powerful symbol of resilience, heritage, and hope.
Visitors can enjoy various amenities at the park, including natural trails, picnic facilities, and restroom access. Additionally, guided tours are available for school groups and organizations.
