Enhancing the Region's Ecology

Friends of A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway protects and promotes the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the 72-mile A1A corridor stretching through St. Johns and Flagler counties. The volunteer-powered organization collaborates with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as community partners, to support the region's rich natural resources, recreation, history, and arts.

In 2021, this iconic coastal route was recognized as an All-American Road, a prestigious national designation that highlights its unique scenic, historic, and ecological significance. It is home to a vibrant array of wildlife, including over 250 species of sea turtles, which play an important role in the coastal ecosystem. The corridor also provides essential habitat for other native and endangered species, such as the North Atlantic right whale, the Anastasia Island beach mouse, and numerous fish and bird species.

Friends of A1A actively supports a range of recreational opportunities that celebrate the area's natural assets, including birdwatching, boating, eco-tours, diving, fishing, golfing, and surfing—all of which contribute to both the local economy and the quality of life.

Educating the Public on Historic and Archaeological Sites

Through its commitment to preserving and promoting historical and archaeological treasures, the Friends of A1A helps raise awareness of significant sites, including Fort Mose Historic State Park, Mala Compra Plantation, and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park.

Supporting the Arts Through Strategic Partnerships

In addition to environmental and historical initiatives, the organization fosters creativity and cultural expression through community art exhibitions and partnerships with local institutions, such as the St. Augustine Art Association, the Hammock community in Northern Flagler County, and the Cultural Center at Ponte Vedra Beach.
