Supporting Self-Sufficiency Through Its Initiatives

Established in 1965, the Northeast Florida Community Action Agency (NFCAA) has been a cornerstone of support for low-income families in Baker, Clay, Nassau, Flagler, St. Johns, and Putnam counties. Its services span a wide range of supports, including utility assistance to help households maintain essential services, weatherization programs that improve home energy efficiency and reduce long-term costs, and family self-sufficiency initiatives that empower individuals to build financial stability.

In addition, the agency offers educational programs and other community-focused initiatives to equip residents with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to achieve long-term success.

Preventing Service Interruptions

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers support to help families cover their utility bills, ensuring access to essential services such as electricity and heating, especially during extreme weather. This assistance helps prevent service disconnections and reduces the financial strain on households facing economic challenges.

Applications are available online only. Applicants may need to provide documentation such as a Disability and/or SSI Benefits Statement, Pay Stub, Unemployment Wage Statement, Pension Printout, Child Support Verification, Current AFDS/TANF Verification, Veteran Benefits, or Worker Compensation Benefits. For more information, please visit here or call (904) 362-8052.

Upgrading Systems and Promoting Family Self-Sufficiency

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is income-based and helps households improve energy efficiency. Services include upgrading heating and cooling systems, monitoring air quality, replacing outdated showerheads, and enhancing insulation throughout the home. These improvements help reduce energy costs and create a safer, more comfortable living environment. For more information, please visit here.

Recognizing the barriers low-income families face in accessing education and employment, the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSSP) supports families in building better futures through education and job opportunities. The program assists participants in preparing for a GED, applying to college or vocational training, and covering related expenses such as transportation and childcare.

By providing these resources, FSSP empowers individuals to take meaningful steps toward independence and to advance both professionally and academically. To apply, please visit here.

Empowering Future Leaders

Lastly, the Data Busters STEAM program is a six-week summer initiative for youth ages 14 to 17 that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Designed to foster critical thinking, the program empowers participants to become innovators and future leaders. For more information, please visit here.
