Supporting Vulnerable Children and Their Families

Safe Families for Children was founded in 2003 and has grown to include more than 100 chapters across the United States. The organization also operates locally in Duval County, Clay County, Putnam County, Nassau County, Flagler County, and St. Johns County.

Its mission is to assist children who are at risk of abuse and to keep them safe during times of family hardship, including homelessness, medical emergencies, unemployment, domestic violence, and rehabilitation.  Safe Families for Children serves as a community support system that helps prevent family isolation and reduces the number of children entering the foster care system.

The organization is guided by the values of compassion, generosity, and hospitality. It partners with churches and community groups to connect families in need with caring volunteers who provide both practical and emotional support. These volunteers serve in several key roles, including host parents, family friends, family coaches, and resource friends.

Working Closely with Host Families and a Network of Compassionate Volunteers

Host parents open their homes temporarily to care for children while parents work through challenges. The length of stay can range from just a few days to as long as one year, depending on each family’s situation. Family friends provide encouragement and practical help by offering meals, babysitting, transportation, or parenting advice. They also advocate for families and help them stay connected to the community.

Family coaches work closely with host parents and biological families to ensure the safety and well-being of the children. They also provide information about available community resources and help build positive relationships between the host families and the parents.

Resource friends support families by donating essential items such as clothing, furniture, and household goods. They may also offer their professional skills, such as healthcare services, counseling, or hairstyling, to help meet a family’s specific needs.
