Providing Emergency Utility Support

Established in 1978, the St. Johns County Department of Social Services supports local families by offering emergency utility assistance, medical services, and referrals to various community resources. Applicants must reside in St. Johns County and provide proof of residency to receive utility assistance.

In addition to residency, individuals seeking utility assistance must submit documentation demonstrating financial hardship. This includes proof of household income, a copy of a past-due bill, valid identification that includes Social Security numbers, a copy of the applicant’s lease, and a letter from the landlord confirming the amount owed on the bill.

Offering Coverage for Inpatient Physician Services

The department’s medical services assistance program is for employed individuals and those with disabilities who lack health insurance. Assistance is available for outpatient services, such as X-rays, laboratory testing, and physical therapy. The program also covers inpatient physician fees, sometimes including access to specialty physician services for life-threatening medical conditions.

To qualify for medical services, applicants must provide proof of residency, their Social Security number, supporting documentation, proof of income, employment or unemployment status, liability details, bank account information, and Medicaid eligibility verification, if applicable.

Collaborating with Community Organizations to Support Residents

St. Johns County Department of Social Services also provides referrals for additional support programs in collaboration with the Department of Children and Families and other community-based organizations. These include financial assistance, food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and access to Medicaid.
