Helping Children Who Display Disruptive Behaviors
Stop Now and Plan (SNAP®) is a free 13-week program offered through the Youth Crisis Center that provides group-based support and skill-building opportunities for children and families. The program is designed for children ages six to eleven who may be exhibiting aggressive behaviors, emotional outbursts, bullying, stealing, vandalism, or other disruptive actions.
By teaching children how to recognize their feelings and develop effective coping strategies, SNAP® helps them manage emotions healthily. Upon completion of the program, groups can participate in a graduation ceremony.
The ultimate goal is to reduce conflict at home and at school, strengthen family relationships, lower the risk of stress and depression, enhance overall family well-being, and encourage positive decision-making. SNAP® Boys and SNAP® Girls Groups are the core of the program and focus on teaching children through interactive games, role-playing, hands-on activities, and guided discussions.
Focusing on Self-Control Techniques
SNAP® in Schools is another component of the program that is delivered directly in the classroom. This model offers a session for groups of up to 30 students. Lessons focus on developing coping strategies, self-control techniques, and decision-making skills in a school setting. Educators can reinforce positive behavior on a larger scale while supporting the overall learning environment.
The SNAP® Parenting Group is offered to parents and caregivers. This group provides a safe and supportive space where parents can learn effective SNAP® strategies, explore positive discipline techniques, and connect with other families who are experiencing similar challenges.
Helping Siblings Lead by Example
To support the entire family, the SNAP® Sibling Group engages brothers and sisters of children enrolled in the program. Through activities such as mentoring, tutoring, group games, and skill-building exercises, siblings are introduced to SNAP® concepts and encouraged to be positive role models.
