Delivering Dependable Transit on Established Routes
Established in 2000 by the St. Johns County Council on Aging, the Sunshine Bus addresses the need for accessible and affordable public transportation throughout St. Johns County. Designed with the entire community in mind, the service supports the daily travel needs of families, students, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities or recovering from medical conditions, and those who rely on service animals for mobility and assistance.
The Sunshine Bus operates a reliable, fixed-route transit system that is affordable and easy to use. Routes are color-coded to simplify navigation for all riders, including those who may be unfamiliar with public transportation.
A specialized door-to-door paratransit service is also available for those unable to use the regular fixed routes due to mobility or health-related limitations. This service requires riders to submit an online application to determine eligibility and ensure appropriate accommodations can be provided.
Facilitating Access to Surrounding Transit Services
All Sunshine Bus vehicles are equipped to meet accessibility needs, including lifts and space for wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices. The transit system serves destinations within St. Johns County.
The Sunshine Bus system connects to broader transportation networks in neighboring Duval and Putnam counties, offering increased mobility and access to employment, education, medical appointments, shopping, and other services. The buses operate six days a week, Monday through Saturday, with the earliest routes beginning around 4:30 a.m. and the latest concluding around 10:30 p.m.
Service hours vary by route, and operations stop on certain federal holidays.
Equipping Riders with Comprehensive Travel Tools
To assist riders in planning their trips, the Sunshine Bus website offers a range of helpful resources, including route schedules, a travel planner, and downloadable rider forms. For added convenience, fare passes and tokens can be purchased at the 2595 Old Moultrie Road administrative office in St. Augustine or directly from the driver at boarding time.
