Guided by Inclusivity and Professionalism

Three Rivers Legal Services (TRLS) is a nonprofit law firm dedicated to providing free or low-cost civil legal assistance, education, and representation to individuals and families. Since its founding in 1978, TRLS has served thousands of clients across North Central and Northeast Florida, including residents of Alachua, Baker, Bradford, Clay, Columbia, Dixie, Duval, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Madison, Nassau, St. Johns, and many other counties. The organization is guided by principles of inclusivity, professionalism, and a commitment to justice.

Consumer Law and Debt Relief

For individuals facing overwhelming debt, wage garnishments, creditor harassment, or repossession of property, TRLS offers legal advice and direct representation. Attorneys may negotiate with creditors, challenge debt collection lawsuits, and guide clients toward long-term financial stability. In certain counties, TRLS also operates a bankruptcy program, helping qualified clients pursue debt discharge or reorganization through the courts.

Family Law and Domestic Violence

TRLS provides support for survivors of domestic violence and clients navigating complex family law matters. Services may include obtaining protective injunctions (restraining orders), representation in divorce and child custody cases, assistance with paternity actions, and recovery for destroyed or damaged property.

Education and Elder Law

Parents and guardians of children with exceptional needs often struggle to access appropriate services in schools. TRLS advocates for students who may require special education, accommodations, or individualized educational plans. Attorneys also provide training and education to parents so they fully understand their rights and the rights of their children under federal and state education law.

Elderly clients facing abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation can receive legal protection and advocacy through TRLS. The organization also assists with estate planning, wills, long-term care arrangements, guardianship proceedings, health care decision-making, and issues relating to public benefits.

Housing and Landlord-Tenant Law

Stable housing is necessary for families and individuals. TRLS represents tenants facing eviction, challenges to illegal utility shutoffs, and addresses landlord violations such as failing to provide reasonable accommodations for disabled tenants. By intervening in these disputes, TRLS works to prevent homelessness and protect renters’ rights.

Disaster Relief and Probate Inheritance

After hurricanes, floods, or other disasters, many residents face home damage, insurance disputes, FEMA claim denials, or eviction. TRLS assists clients in appealing denied benefits, negotiating with insurance companies, and resolving conflicts with contractors, landlords, and mortgage lenders to ensure that survivors can recover and rebuild.

For families managing the estate of a loved one, TRLS guides them through the probate process, helping heirs understand their rights and responsibilities. Services may include assistance with wills, deeds, and the transfer of property.

Veterans Services and Public Benefits

Honoring the service of military veterans, TRLS offers legal aid in matters involving consumer protection, family law, housing, disability benefits, and discharge upgrades. These services help veterans secure the rights and benefits they have earned.

TRLS assists clients with applications and appeals for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicare, and Medicaid. Legal help is also available for those whose benefits have been reduced or terminated.

Driver’s License and Criminal Record Expungement

Many clients face barriers to employment, housing, or transportation due to suspended driver’s licenses or old criminal records. TRLS provides legal assistance with license reinstatement and record expungement, helping clients restore opportunities for work and self-sufficiency.
