Teaching Participants How to Respond to Threats Effectively
Women Against Violent Encounters (W.A.V.E.) empowers women and girls through free self-defense classes offered quarterly throughout the year. These classes are designed to educate participants on how to protect themselves, respond to threats, and increase awareness in their daily lives.
Led by experienced female officers from the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office (SJSO), St. Augustine Beach Police Department (SABPD), and St. Augustine Police Department (SAPD), the program emphasizes both verbal and physical defense strategies. Participants learn how to use strong commands, assertive body language, and practical physical techniques to deter and defend against potential attackers.
Fostering a Supportive Environment
W.A.V.E. focuses not only on physical defense but also on the mental preparedness and confidence needed to navigate threatening situations safely. The classes foster a supportive and empowering environment where women can ask questions, build skills, and feel more in control of their safety.
Classes are open to girls and women ages 13 and older. Due to high demand and limited availability, early registration is strongly encouraged. For upcoming class dates, detailed information, and to reserve a spot, participants are advised to visit the W.A.V.E. website.
